Around 1.1 million children in England and Wales are estimated to live in a blended step-family, meaning they have an amalgamation of parents, new partners and children from different relationships.

Blended families are becoming increasingly common in the UK, and although in many instances separation can be the start of a happier environment for children, these environments are not always congruous.

Partner Mark Harper commented on the difficulties these families face, stating that “sometimes the step-parent relationship can be very strong and on separation or divorce, step-children having continuing contact with their step-parents is critical for their well-being. This of course can be a threat to biological parents.”

He further advised that “if your partner or future spouse already has children, it is key to get to know the children well before moving in with them. A pre-nup is essential to minimise financial claims on divorce, if there is a divorce.”
