Despite the array of tools open to the family courts to confirm parties’ stated positions, in recent years the use of private investigators has become ever more common by HNW and UHNW individuals to garner further information.

Commenting in The Times, partner Alex Carruthers noted: “When marriages break down there is almost always a breakdown of trust. So when one party declares that their assets are much less than the other expected, the first reaction is suspicion.

“Although the family court has many tools available to test the probity of the stated position, often clients are drawn to private investigators to dig up extra information.”
