Mark Harper calls for divorce and family law reform in The Times

Partner Mark Harper has spoken out in favour of The Times’ campaign to modernise UK divorce and family law.

Mark said that the present law added conflict to proceedings, “when there is too much acrimony in divorce already” and pointed to the example of Scotland, where divorce is allowed after one year’s separation.

Mark also agreed that cohabiting, unmarried couples deserved legal protections and rights when separating:

“The law is failing to protect tens of thousands of couples on cohabitation breakdown. They have no legal claims against each other. It is a disgrace that the government has failed to implement the Law Commission’s recommendations from 2007. Scotland amended its law several years ago to give cohabitants rights on breakdown.”
