Frances Hughes in The Times Law Diary following her success in the Christina Estrada case:

“To get ahead, get a hat” was the old adage. What if you’re already ahead — perhaps by £75 million?

The answer was supplied by Frances Hughes, partner of Hughes Fowler Carruthers, who acted for Christina Estrada in her record-breaking divorce settlement in London last week.

Lined up alongside the merry divorcée for the cameras, Hughes wore a stand-out sizzling pink coat that drew fascinated attention in contrast to the black and white surroundings. In the competitive world of deluxe divorces, you needed to look no further to know who stole the show.

So where did Hughes get that delicious coat? Claiming she’d “not expected to see any of the press on the day in question”, Hughes said it came from a shop under her offices — namely Chancery Lane’s Ede & Ravenscroft — supplier of all lawyers’ sartorial needs, including for days of triumph. Ironically, Hughes couldn’t find her usual talisman — a pair of “lucky shoes” — that morning. They are now redundant. But look out for the coat.”
